it was in beta, but treeform decided to do a full rewrite, there is an alpha version now. (alpha is pre-beta)

well fps are ok but i have plenty of those im more interested in the mmorts genera right now, plus this game reminded me of home world i loved that game :) btw will this be a free game?
Yes MMORTS is in interesting concept. I have not seen it done well before. I hope to change that.
And yes this game is a bit like homeworld. But what most people remember from homeworld is story, the art, the sound - the vibe of the game. We can reproduce 3d mechanics and space ships going pew pew, but the actual "HW vibe" might be much harder especially since MMORTSes are multiplayer games - and this game is PvP particularly.
No sorry this game will not be free. It might have a way to play for free but with pro paid accounts. The main reasons is that MMO's require servers - and normally server people want to get paid. This is our hobby but we would love to do it full time - making interesting game in genres that no Big Game Company wants to go into and the only way we can do this is if our hobbies pay pay for rent and food.
hm free to play with pay accounts is cool. way i see it so far for mmos its like this pay to play unless its really big like WoW you sacrifice players, free gets more players at first but most of them drop off and of course you have to pay for server and that can be really expensive so cash shops and adds can be put in but those almost never pay enough to make a living off unless once again you have lots of players. but that could just be me btw i have tried almost all the mmorts out there some are ok but none are good so i have high hopes for this game.

I think Homeworld2 actually had pretty bad strategy. I have not played hw1 via other people but it looks like it suffered from corvette rush problems. Hw2 was all based around tech jumping. Basically you needed to tech up to the new type of ships from fighters to corvettes to frigates to capital ships based on how your enemy was doing. So really the 3d aspect did not matter much. It was all basically a tech game. Yes you needed to scout. Yes you need to harass harvest operations. Yes you needed to micro your units well. But that paled in comparison to how the teching up to next level was important.
2aw is not based around that system at all. Instead is more of a World in Conflict inspired system. Basically each player gets equal amount of resources and goes at it. There is no resource gathering in game its basically a trickle down over time. The game is played on 3 levels - i hope near equally:
1 Unit match up - make your unit counter units the enemy is sending.
2 Capturing points - you need to know when to take a point and how to hold it.
3 Special Abilities - again this is very important when to apply and when to fear them.
Another important aspect is that player can join a battle at any time. The teams must stay balanced in terms of points etc...
Then there is the persistent element that battles that you win and loose have a long term consequences in a galaxy. The galactic level would play more slowly akin to a browser game. This is where the game become less defined and is more political/strategic in nature.
i mean hw1 i haven't played 2 tho im sure it is good too, also say a hypothetical match you get 3000r to spend on ships,upgrades, and stuff like that after the 3000r is up is there a way to get more like in hw1 where r flowed in over time. Another thing will there be a guild system? if so i know i just got here, but when im committing on a game thats in beta or whatever i like to add ideas. So what about guild ships? Hard to build and the guild leader/members must work hard to get but it can be used in certain matches to bring massive devastation to the battle field. just a thought
Well in 2aw you get about 100rp per player. Say you buy 10 ships costing 10rp each. Now you have used up all of your rp. When you lose 1 ship you get 10rp back slowly. If you loose 3 more ships you get 30rp back slowly - total of 40rp. Now you can buy a 40rp ship to really fight back.
Yes there are guilds in 2aw called fleets. Each fleet will have a commander and people under him. I am not sure what else be included at this point. The problem with your idea of "guild ships" is that transcends the battle. This was a major problem with the first beta. Players just payed at the meta game layer (like acquiring guild ship) and did not care about the actual battle mechanics. This is why now we have a hard rule, nothing from the meta game can flow down to the battle game. So sorry we probably will not be implementing guild ships. There was a huge debate about veteran ships - ships that level up over several battles that was scraped too for the same reason - even though i really wanted to have it. We cant have meta game effecting the battle game or other battle games effecting current battle game - it just spoils the battle because who ever shows up with most guns wins - so the point of the game becomes to show up with most guns. This is not how we want the game to play.
well thats true but there will be rewards for playing right? I dont mean that players or ships have to level up but there should be some kind reward for winning/playing right?
there will be ranks/achievements, but the current version is still only alpha so still A LOT can change.
as for the "HW2 vibe", i think AFF has its own vibe so.....

Is alpha testing an actual download testing of the game like beta or is it diffrent?
